I did some "travelling" with boats in the khlongs here. It is very diverse - and you see people living in very basic wooden huts. Crazy told me that average thai people earn 10.000 baht per month that is 200 EURs. It is a pretty hard life for most of them. There is also a lot of corruption here with the police whole of Kao San (street where all these backpacker tourists are) is mafia. But as long as you dont speak the language you never know the whole truth.
